WTUL 91.5 FM and Uncle Chris Present:

When I was a young boy growing up in New Orleans my days were filled with some really good radio and TV programming. I was born in 1965, my early years spent watching Popeye and Pals on weekends, The New Zoo Review weekdays, and the standard Saturday morning cartoon fare. Of course that was back when we really had cartoons on a Saturday morning.

As I grew older and my first child was born I had the opportunity to watch TV and listen to the radio with him regularly. I realized that children's programming, and radio programming in general, had changed. Do you remember Schoolhouse Rock? To this day I sing those songs in my head when trying to remember certain things. How about music from the big band era, swing, and so many other "lost" musical styles? And, this is an important point, programming appealed to parents and children.

Today's programming with rare exceptions isn't as entertaining as I would expect it to be, though in the past few years it is getting so much better. The idea for this show developed a few years ago and at the time it was simply a "I wish someone would do something" kind of idea. Growing up exposed to many genres of music, I wanted my boys (I have two now) to get the same exposure.

Thankfully WTUL has offered me the opportunity to live my dream. An early Saturday morning show for kids and their parents. It's music for all ages and stages. The show is an eclectic mixture of stories, rock, folk, country, new age, bluegrass, disco, oldies, and everything in between all done at a level kids will enjoy and parents won't want to turn off immediately.

The Kids Show is a production of WTUL 91.5 FM, the radio station of Tulane University. Go Green Wave!
