I have to predicate any review of the Movers by saying that I have been a fan longer than I can remember, and my opinion will be oh so biased. I have worn out three CD offerings from these guys and look forward to completely wearing out number four. Juice Box Heroes is a compilation of some of their best music with something new thrown in the mix for the long term fans. If this is your first exposure to the Movers by all means sit back, enjoy, and learn what I've tried to get across to folks for so long now; music for kids does not have to be music for kids.

The 'Imagination Movers Theme' is a bit of a remix, but still brings back so many memories of Saturday mornings at the station for me. I play 'First Day of School' at the beginning of each school year, and if you're a parent reading this it hits home. 'I want my Mommy' goes out to all of us remembering the joy, and fear, of sleeping alone when we became "big". Check out the 'Medicine Song' and 'Please and Thank You' for the younger crowd, 'Seven Days a Week and 'Clean My Room' for those a little older, and 'Calling All Movers' for everyone.

My favorite, and yes, here comes more of the bias, is 'We've Got Each Other'. It's a song about evacuating with the family for a hurricane, Katrina to be exact. Memories, memories. Dave, Rich, Scott, and Smitty were all affected by her, as were all of us here in New Orleans, and it's great to have someone make something good come from it, especially the success of these guys. You will not find, IMHO, a more fine group of young men doing what they love to do; entertain you and your children. Congratulations to them on their success. And their success is your success. If you get the opportunity, check this one out, watch their videos sometimes on Disney, and marvel at being able to follow your dreams.

At last I think there are folks understand what music for kids is all about. If you find yourself browsing through racks of CD's looking for something for your children and the first thing that comes to mind is Barney or the Wheels on the Bus stop reading now. Hairspray has a great tune called "Welcome to the 60's". Well friends, welcome to the 21st century. Your kids like to listen to the same kind of music you do. And there are actually some artists that understand that. Shocking.

The Jimmies offer upbeat and fun great rock and everything in between. If you've ever tuned in and found that garage/club band that knocked your socks off you'll appreciate this CD. Opened my mail and found this one, gave it a quick listen, played it the next weekend. Give it a listen, play it for your kids, then when there is nobody watching you can play it for yourself. Been in my CD player back and forth to work for about a week now. Catchy tunes, great arrangements, and great vocals offer something for everyone. Forget that mainstream stuff you are so used to hearing. Sit back, pop this in your player, and smile. Nice to be a kid again, isn't it?

You'll see much more of this CD on my upcoming playlists.

As a parent I can well remember the Terrible Twos, as I am sure my parents remember my Terrible Twos. Give this CD a listen and you will certainly remember The Terrible Twos. They come from Kansas City, MO (home of the Doo-Dads) and offer up an outstanding indie CD of real rock and pop. I would almost call it 70's rock and 80's pop, but you are welcome to offer your opinion. I've played this one over and over again since first listening to it, and I'm more impressed each time I load it in the player. The Twos offer a fun CD that any of my listners would certainly enjoy.

I've had this one maybe a month now, and believe me, the greates challenge I have is listening to all the music that comes my way. It's hard to stand out in the crowd. Overall, I probably have somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000 or so CD's of music that I use for The Kids Show. Think about it, with an average 10 songs or so each and that's 20,000 songs to choose from for a show each week. Tough choices. Yet this is one of those CD offerings that needs to be played often.

My favorite is "Pizza and Chocolate Milk", though "When I get to Eleven" is a real close second. For those in the know, I'm doing DJ duties on one of the stages at the Zoo To Do for Kids April 27th and this CD has forced me to change a playlist I've been working on literally for months and thought I had finished at last. These songs beg to be played to chasing lights and bubble machines.

If you're looking for music from The Terrible Twos check out their website . If you want more in-depth opinions, drop me a line sometime.

If you've been a long-term listener to The Kids Show you'll be familiar with the music of Milkshake. I think I have literally played cuts from Happy Songs and Bottle of Sunshine to the point that they sound like old vinyl when I get the chance to air them. Now comes "Play", the newest release by Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl and it is a spectacular follow up on their previous works.

Play follows the up-beat, fun songs format that you expect from Milkshake. Play is a compilation of songs about things kids do when they play. You can be a pirate, a superhero, go bowling, or simply "Play". This is a CD filled with songs that will have you singing along, not a CD of sing-a-long songs. If you can understand the difference, you'll love this CD.

You can visit Milkshake at Milkshake Music to learn more about the band. Enjoy!

From Silver City New Mexico comes a great CD from The Jellydots. Here is adult music for kids, music that many adults would not know is "childrens'" music unless they read the liner notes and figured, "wow, this is odd". Check out "Three is a Magic Number", you remember that from Schoolhouse Rock don't you? Awesome cover, might even say that it's my favorite version of the song. The opening track, "Bicycle", is an interesting case in point for this CD.

Pop this one in your player and let your kids listen. Watch their reaction (and take a look at yours as well). First off, this is a rockin', upbeat, incredible tune. And the remainder of the CD continues this. Another welcome addition to any CD collection.

Give the The Jellydots a listen sometime at their My Space Page to learn more about the band and to sample some of their songs.

Sigh. Steve Weeks has released the thrid volume of Alphabet Songs. Volume III continues the excellent series, and is, IMHO, his best effort yet. Steve was one of the first contributors of music to The Kids Show, and I've played every cut from the first two releases. His music has progressed through each CD, and today is everything that music for children is becoming; rock, pop, blues, and a little bit of everything in between.

Steve is one of those unique individuals that has the ability to appeal to all ages. One of my many "tests" if you will of new music is to leave CD's in the player of my wife's car for her and my two boys, ages 8 and 4, to listen to. If I keep finding a specific CD in the player, I know I might be on to something. If I get calls from listeners asking about an artist (or really about specific songs that might be from one artist) I move ever closer to posting these reviews.

Fort Wayne Indiana based Madeline's Toybox features Michael Lapp on Lead Vocals, Kris Hensler on Guitar, Andy Schaefer on Keyboards, and a whole lot of great music. I would call it pop rock, though many would call it something else I'm sure, and an overall a well produced CD. This is a more kid friendly CD if you will, though that's not to say anything else in these reviews is not.

As always, favorites. The title track, "Great Big Sunshine Day" is a catchy tune that I've played numerous times on my show. Another favorite is "Popsicle Blues", which for many of you might just bring back childhood memories. At the end of the day, what is it that is really special about the music we play for our kids? Are we building memories for them in the future or are we building our own memories of our children? Intersting question, eh?

Trout Fishing in America have produced numerous recordings for kids and families and their latest, My Best Day, is a live recording from an Arkansas concert that features music from many of their CDs. Keith and Ezra have that rare ability to appeal to kids of all ages as well as their parents. To be honest, you could call most of their recordings music for parents that can be shared with their kids.

Much of their music is folk in the sense that it is "folksy" music, but they can rock with the best of them. If you're looking for an addition to your CD case this is a good bet, but if you don't have any of their music yet I would suggest starting with a CD such as It's a Puzzle or Infinity. All in all, an excellent release and sure to be a hit with their fans, and I for one am a huge fan of theirs.

I'm not sure I should be allowed to write a review for Eight Feet as my bias would show immediately. I have followed the Imagination Movers from Good Ideas to Calling All Movers, to the latest, Eight Feet. I've had them on my show a couple times, and seen them in concert more than I can count. I'm not sure there is a more dedicated group of guys out there making music for kids than the Movers my opinion of course).

So, you may ask, do I like their music?

Eight feet is their latest and greatest release; they have matured well over these past few years. And considering that I believe at the least one of their first two discs should be included in any CD collection for kids, that is saying something. From the old world dancing of Seven Days a Week, to the Evacuation Song that anyone from New Orleans will understand, Eight Feet works well through all the cuts. It covers every style of music you can think of, and if you have the opportunity to listen to it, or better yet to see the Movers in person, you'll understand why I like them so much.

My review of this CD? Get one for yourself. Get one soon. You might even want to buy one for your kids. The Movers have signed with Disney so expect to hear much more in the near future. Check them out here. Tell them you heard about them on The Kids Show.

If you're looking for snappy, fun, songs that get stuck in your head music, Marvelous Day is everything you're looking for. Marvelous Day is one of those special offerings that comes along every so often that I find myself listening to on the show, at home, in the car, and at the office. The latest offering from Steve Songs is a more upbeat and rockin' disc than his previous releases. Don't get me wrong here, I've been a fan of his music for some time now, but this is the best yet for me.

The title track, "Marvelous Day" is an awesome start the day tune, and to be honest if I could get away with playing it to open every show of mine I would. Spyrtle the Turtle is a cool song about, well, a turtle, and it even has a "coral" to the story (get the CD and you'll understand). I enjoy the mental images I form when I think of the elephant playing hide and seek and can't wait for the ducks to hatch. If you truly want to experience what I so often talk about, music for kids and the big kid in all of us, here is your opportunity. An A+ addition to your CD collection.

You can visit Steve if you click here. Be sure to let him know you heard about him on The Kids Show on WTUL.

How much is a memory worth? If someone offered you a CD, and keep in mind you probably need to be about my age to understand, and it had John Secada, Amy Grant, B J Thomas, Crystal Gayle, and a host of others singing your favorites would it interest you? If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers or you maybe watched it with your kids, and you enjoyed it, you'll love this CD.

It's the music we all remember. It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood when you listen not only to the opening track on this CD but to all the music that will bring back those memories. Personally, and remember that I'm just a big kid, I enjoy sitting back and listening to this recording when it's time for peace and quiet. The arrangement is first class, the songs amazing, and as a bonus it comes with a DVD that highlights the making of the CD as well as the impact of Fred Rogers on all of us.

If you didn't have the opportunity to see Curious George the movie don't despair as Jack Johnson has a wonderful compact disc that will bring the movie to you. This is an easy listening disc, and though some of the songs move a bit up tempo it is overall something you can listen to during any evening when you are in the mood to relax and enjoy some good music.

Here again is what I strive for when I bring music to you, for this could easily be an adult CD for kids or a cd for the kids that adults enjoy. The very first cut, "Upside Down", is my favorite, and for those that remeber the Three is a Magic Number tune the "3Rs" will make you smile as well as offer you a twist on the old version.

Keep this one in the car with you for those stuck in traffic days with the kids and let them sing along.

I first became a fan of Justin Roberts when he sent me a copy of Yellow Bus a few years back. It was release just about the time that music for kids took a turn toward a more "adult" approach. He followed it up with Way Out, and excellent release, and now his newest release, Meltdown.

Meltdown is rock and roll, pop, and maybe some mellow soul at times. What it is not is the standard sing-a-long kids music so many have some to associate with the genre. Meltdown (the song, not the CD) will spark that memory of what life is like raising kids, and your kids will easily relate as well as they will also with "My Brother Did It". Another of my faves is "Imaginary Rhino" which is one of those you'll be singing it all day kinds of tunes.

Terri Hendirx is a folk artist living in San Marcos, Texas and Celebrate the Difference is her first offering of music for kids on the Willory Records label. Terri is a Grammy Award winning artist that brings a bit of "soul" to her songs.

Listen to "Nerves", which starts off seemingly slow and sappy and then goes off on a punk/rock tangent that really works and you begin to understand the talent this young lady has to offer. "Play Ball" is a fun baseball tune, and "Get Your Goat On" will make you smile. My favorite on this disc is "I Want to be Your Friend" that anyone that has ever had to move or even start a new school can relate to.

A welcome addition to any collection, you can visit Terri here to learn more about her and her music.

Raplh Covert is one of the most prolific composers of children's music today and he follows up his The Amazing Adventures of Kid Astro CD with this newest release, Green Gorilla Monster and Me. As is standard with most of his offerings you will find a wide spectrum of musical styles for your listening pleasure.

If country music is your taste, sample "Dance Around", if you like punk, try "I Don't Wanna", and if simply listening to good music is what you really look for try any other track on this disc. Ralph has evolved well since his beginnings in children's music and the complete line of music from "Ralph's World" is sure to please. Ralph is one more of my top ten essentials for any beginning collection.

If your tastes include rock and roll with a little fun mixed in the newest release from Daddy a Go Go might tickle your fancy. Eat Every Bean and Pea on Your Plate is a collection of tunes that cover cell phones, baseball, manatees, walking, and a really neat instrumental cover of To Sir With Love. You might find his music a bit quirky at first, but it really grows on you.

Crying in the Dugout may bring back memories of that old little league coach you had years ago. Hang up and drive is a kids song that every grown up will relate to instantly. Oh how we have all lived through this lady in the song. For Those About to Walk is a rocking tune about your toddler and his or her steps (and falls). The CD works well and would be a great addition to your collection. There are other discs out there I would recommend adding first if you were trying to assemble a basic CD library for your kids, but if you've reached that point, Eat Every Bean and Pea on Your Plate would be a cool addition for the kids.
